Backstory: Meilin was originally a simple village girl, until a volcano near her village erupted. The farm at the foot of the volcano and half the village was destroyed by the lava flow.

What Meilin found unusual was that a girl who had worked on the farm appeared to have vanished, and no-one really cared. She finally discovered that the girl had been climbing up the mountain slope on the day the volcano had erupted, and presumably had perished there. The reason the farmer didn't care is that the girl had been nothing more to him then a slave.

Meilin thought it strange that no sign of the girl had been found, and decided to explore the mountain. While climbing up by a gorge cut by a waterfall, the edge crumbled and she fell. She managed to catch the edge, but thought that she would die, as no-one else tended to climb on the mountain slopes. However, her scream had caught someone's attention.

A young woman dressed in a long black coat suddenly appeared on the edge of the gorge above her, and helped her up. The newcomer told her to get off the mountain as it was dangerous, but before Meilin had a chance to move, Shadow Heartless appeared around the pair. Meilin had no idea what to do, but her companion flung her arm out as though throwing something, and at the gesture, a wave of lava incinerated several of the Heartless. The young woman pushed Meilin in the direction of the gap she had created, simply saying "Go!" before she raced in the other direction. Most of the Heartless followed her, but several stayed where they were and went for Meilin. Terrified, she ran, but fell as stones under her slipped.

She rolled over just as one of the Heartless leapt for her, and she swung her arm up in an attempt to shield herself, closing her eyes. Meilin suddenly felt a warmth in her arm, and a weight appeared in her hand. Opening her eyes, she found herself holding the Dragon’s Roar. Using it, she managed to evade the Heartless.

Since then, Meilin - trained in swordsmanship by her brother in order to handle her Keyblade more effectively - has now left her village and travels, looking for adventure.

No matter what anyone else says, Meilin believes that the young woman she met on the mountain that day was the girl who vanished, and that is her appearance that Meilin owes both her life and the appearance of her Keyblade to.
